From sun to shade, we carry a wide selection of Perennial plants that suit all areas of your garden. On select perennials when you buy one you get a second for free. There is still plenty of time to fill your garden with these perennial treasures.
As another successful spring season is comes to an end, we at the Niagara College Greenhouse and Nursery would like to send a heartfelt thank you to our amazing community. It is your patronage and support that makes what we do here at Niagara College possible.
As we are coming to an end of our annual bedding plant sales, our hours will be reduced throughout the summer to prepare the greenhouse for the upcoming academic year. There will still be amazing perennial and nursery plants and fresh, tasty produce available in our store. As well if you are looking to spruce up your home or office with some healthy, oxygen producing tropical plants, they will be here too. Our co-op students are now growing our Fall Mum crop to have ready by September, they are also making this Niagara-On-The-Lake campus one of the most beautiful campuses in the world to study at.
We have been busy here in the greenhouse over the past year. With your support the Niagara College Greenhouse has been able to purchase new pieces of equipment for students to learn from. Most recently we have purchased an Aquaponics system. Aquaponics is the combination of raising fish and growing plants in the same system, the basic premise behind this is that the fish will fertilize the plants and the plants will filter the water for the fish. It is an amazing experience for the students to learn from and it gives the greenhouse the ability to produce more produce for the culinary program.
Keeping on the topic of growing more food we have also purchased a piece of equipment that students can learn to grow micro-greens for salads and garnishes in a controlled environment again for our culinary program. This is something unique that students are working with because they are learning not only the techniques required to grow the product, they are also learning the business behind it to sell the product for a profit. It is part of a project where the horticulture students are working with the Canadian Food and Wine Institute to grow a product that the culinary students can use, learn the costs associated with the process and create a price that is profitable. Another area of cross-collaboration between schools is our organic vegetable garden, which has doubled in size from what it was last year. Again, horticulture students are working with chefs from the CFWI to learn what kinds of fruits and vegetables are desired and growing the produce for them. This type of collaboration invites both sides to appreciate how much work, effort and not to mention passion that is involved in both disciplines that can sometimes be taken for granted.
These are only some of the exciting happenings at Niagara College Greenhouse and Nursery. We are always looking into new and innovative ways to make horticulture not only a fun and exciting environment to learn in but our leading edge programming is producing top of the line students that are career ready and second to none.
