Garden Clippings

As part of their studies in our Horticulture programs our students prepare fact sheets called “Garden Clippings”, which give you basic maintenance information for various plants, as well as the history behind some of our leafy friends.

Hosta “Patriot”

Type: Perennial

The ‘Patriot’ hosta is a highly recognized, top-selling, white-margined hosta and the American Hosta Growers’ 1997 Hosta of the Year. As a Hosta Francée sport, it shares the same elegant form but with a wider, creamy-white margin.

Hosta “Paul’s Glory”

Type: Perennial

The cultivar 'Paul’s Glory' was discovered in 1987 by Paul Hofer in Perry, Ohio. It was found as a mutation of the hosta ‘Perry’s True Blue.’ ‘Paul’s Glory’ was named Hosta of the Year in 1999 and was considered the best new hosta in years.

Hosta “Regal Splendor”

Type: Perennial

This hosta blooms in summer with spikes of lavender to white, lily-like flowers, which can be quite showy. Some newer plants may have 50-75 blooms on each flower scape.

Hosta “Guacamole” (Hosta of the Year 2002)

Type: Perennial

‘Guacamole’ is a ‘Fragrant Bouquet’ mutation that has proven to be an outstanding landscape plant, with a fast growth rate even when transplanted into 1 or 2 gallon containers,

Hosta “Paradigm” (Hosta of the Year 2007)

Type: Perennial

Plantain lily, funkia or hosta are some common names referring to the same plant; however, the proper nomenclature is hosta. Hostas are from the Liliacea family , and the genus is hosta .

Hosta “Stained Glass”

Type: Perennial

‘Stained Glass’ is a sport of the 2002 Hosta of the Year cultivar, ‘Guacamole.’ A sport is a spontaneous and notable variation from the normal growth habit and appearance of the rest of the original plant.

Hosta “Sum and Substance” (Hosta of the Year 2004)

Type: Perennial

'Sum and Substance' is one of the largest hostas. At maturity, it may be 36 inches tall and 80 inches wide. Although it grows rapidly for a large hosta, it may take three to four years to mature.

How Leaves Change Colour

Type: General Advice

As days shorten and become cooler, leaves begin to change colour due to the decline of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis uses the sun to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar (food).

Hydrangea macrophylla

Type: Seasonal

Hydrangeas are natives of the Himalayas, North and South America, and central and eastern Asia. The bush grows wild along the rivers of China and Japan and was brought to Europe by plant collectors in the 1800s. Hydrangeas are marsh or aquatic plants.

Indoor Cacti

Type: Seasonal

A unique feature about these plants is their prickles and thorns, which help to protect the plants from grazing animals.
